Avatar is a 2009 American science fiction film directed, written, produced, and co-edited by James Cameron, and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver. The film is set in the year 2154, when humans are mining a valuable mineral called unobtanium on Pandora, a lush habitable moon of a gas giant in the Alpha Centauri star system. The expansion of the mining colony threatens the continued existence of a local tribe of Na'vi – a humanoid species indigenous to Pandora.

The film's title refers to the genetically engineered Na'vi bodies used by a team of researchers, including protagonist Jake Sully, to interact with the natives of Pandora. The film was first announced by Cameron in 1996 and was in development for over a decade, with the main filming taking place in 2007.

Avatar was released in the United States and Canada on December 18, 2009, and received positive reviews from critics. The film broke several box office records during its release and became the highest-grossing film of all time, as well as in the United States and Canada, surpassing Cameron's Titanic, which had held those records since 1997.

The film's visual effects, which were created using a blend of live-action filming and computer-generated imagery (CGI), were widely praised, and the film won three Academy Awards, for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects, and four Golden Globe Awards, for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, Best Original Score and Best Original Song.

Cameron's inspiration for Avatar came from his interest in the beauty of the natural world and the idea that there could be other life forms in the universe. He began developing the script in the early 1990s and worked on the project for over a decade, using new technology to create the film's complex visual effects.

The film was primarily shot in Los Angeles, California, at James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment studios, using a modified version of the motion capture technology used in the making of the film The Lord of the Rings. The film's setting and creatures were designed by conceptual artist and costume designer, Mayes Rubeo, who drew inspiration from various indigenous cultures.

The film's lead actors Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver, performed their roles through motion capture, with the exception of Weaver, who performed her role through live-action filming.

Avatar premiered in London on December 10, 2009, and was released in the United States and Canada on December 18, 2009. It was released in conventional and IMAX theaters, as well as in 3D and 2D formats. The film was a critical and commercial success and broke several box office records during its release.

Avatar grossed $2.79 billion in worldwide box office revenue, making it the highest-grossing film of all time, surpassing Titanic, which had held the record since 1997. The film also became the highest-grossing film in the United States and Canada, grossing $760 million in the United States and Canada and $2.03 billion in other countries.

Avatar received positive reviews from critics, who praised its visual effects, direction, and performances. The film's use of 3D technology and motion capture were also praised.
