Typesense SearchSense delivers instant autocomplete and rich suggestion cards in under 10 milliseconds.
Search is the front door of Postcodewise. When a user types a postcode or town name, every millisecond of delay introduces cognitive friction. Under our strict Laws of UX standards—specifically the Doherty Threshold—system feedback must occur in under 400 milliseconds to keep users in a productive state of flow.
In Postcodewise v2.31, we replaced our traditional database search infrastructure with Typesense SearchSense—an in-memory, typo-tolerant search engine optimized specifically for British geospatial coordinates.
The result is a transformative leap in speed: location search queries that previously took 300–400ms now return in under 10 milliseconds.

The Engineering Challenge
The UK postal system encompasses:
- Over 1.8 million active postcodes (plus hundreds of thousands of historical and archived codes).
- Thousands of postal districts (Outcodes), electoral wards, boroughs, and towns.
- Frequent user input variations: spaced (
SW1A 1AA), unspaced (sw1a1aa), partial (sw1), or informal place names ("Canary Wharf", "Wimbledon").
In traditional relational databases (MySQL/PostgreSQL), executing LIKE '%...%' queries across millions of rows with sorting and geographic constraints causes table scans, index contention, and server strain during peak traffic.
The SearchSense Architecture
To achieve sub-10ms latency at scale, we engineered a dedicated Typesense indexing pipeline:
1. Custom N-Gram Tokenization & Prefix Matching
We tokenized UK postal formats so that typing SW1, SW1A, or SW1A 1 matches candidates immediately without waiting for a space or casing keypress. Following Postel's Law ("Be liberal in what you accept, conservative in what you produce"), the engine effortlessly handles lowercase, missing spaces, and partial queries.
2. Typo-Tolerance & Geographic Prioritization
If a user misspells a town or enters an adjacent character, SearchSense applies typo-distance matching while prioritizing primary postal centers over small hamlets.
3. High-Throughput Batch Synchronization
A specialized Artisan console command (php artisan search:index-typesense) processes and synchronizes postcode chunks in parallel, keeping the in-memory index synchronized with newly added PAF addresses.
Refined UI/UX: Eliminating the Blocking Search Modal
Speed is useless if the interface feels clunky. Alongside the backend engine, we redesigned the search interaction:
- No More Blocking Modals: We removed the full-screen modal overlay that disrupted the hero view. Search results now appear in an elegant, opaque dropdown anchored directly to the search input.
- Full Keyboard Affordance: Navigate suggestions with
ArrowDown/ArrowUp, hitEnterto navigate immediately, or pressEscapeto dismiss. - Mobile-Responsive Suggestion Cards: Results display the postal district, administrative region, and direct navigation links with touch targets exceeding 44px for effortless mobile tapping.

Real-World Impact
| Metric | Before (SQL Search) | After (Typesense SearchSense) | Improvement |
|---|---|---|---|
| P50 Query Latency | 280 ms | 6 ms | 46x Faster |
| P99 Query Latency | 620 ms | 12 ms | 51x Faster |
| Typo Recovery | 0% (Exact match only) | 100% (Fuzzy fallback) | Seamless |
| Search Dropdown Render | Disrupted page flow | Fluid inline card | Impeccable |
